Geneva Music Festival

Paléo Festival Nyon

Course de l’Escalade

The Course de l’Escalade, emblematic event in Geneva, happens every first Saturday of December, namely one week before the traditional historical procession commemorating the Escalade. This race, opened to anybody, includes a historical route through the old town, two walking trials and the famous noncompetitive “Marmite race”, where participants have to wear fancy dress costumes, according to custom.

The Escalade is one of the most ancient Genevan traditions, commemorating the victory of the city against the Duke of Savoy, Charles-Emmanuel 1st's troops, launched during the night of the 11th of December 1602, by attempting to climb the defensive walls of the city with wooden ladders. Today, this commemoration is celebrated with costume processions, traditional songs and shooting demonstrations.
